Mad Madrid

I didn’t know what to think of Madrid prior to our arrival- mixed reports had placed it somewhere in between a boring stopover and a vibrant rival to the ever popular Barcelona. There’s no denying I liked it as a city, but it’s really just that-a city.

Good, cheap shopping, lots of bars and restaurants and plenty of street performers to keep you entertained all afternoon, Madrid tries hard and successfully to bring lots of visitors in. But it definitely lacks the ‘things to see’ elements of its east-coast sister. Even our Spanish friends told us we had seen everything in our first day!

Unexpected tango shows are also a pleasant surprise when getting lost down the windy streets of La Latina.

Props to our excellent hostel ‘Way Hostel’, by far the best one I’ve ever stayed in-clean, efficient, great location, free breakkie and wifi, excellent kitchen and tv room. But most importantly the staff was happy, friendly and extremely helpful, wanting to make your stay all that it could be.

9.5 out of 10 (half off for see-through shower doors in the ladies)
