The Buffet

I have been accused in the past of watching sitcom repeats a little too often...but sometimes they teach you things you never thought you'd need.

Such as how to eat a buffet.

In an episode of one of my favourites, Will and Grace, Grace the buffet expert, navigates Leo past the "fillers", that is the bread and pasta, straight to the expensive items such as the crab.

So I had that fully in mind when we got to the gourmet buffet at the Bellagio in Las Vegas (we'd won money on the tables and decided to treat ourselves).

Plates filled with crabs legs, sushi, prawns, prime rib, paella and things we thought we should 'try' just cause, filled our table.

Plus, of course, our speciality sampler plate of delectable french pastries.

Amazing!

Deathly Denver

On our way to Colorado Springs

The Balancing Rock at the Garden of the Gods

All that talk of not making prior judgements has happened again...in reverse.

All my high hopes for a picturesque Denver, Colorado came crashing down as we spent the last 4 days walking along the drug-ridden, homeless filled, downtrodden streets of depression, while staying in a half-way house that doubled as a hostel (though where were all the other travellers?).

We did escape however for a day, and drove south to lovely Colorado Springs and to the amazing Garden of the Gods for some ancient-world awe.

And $2 bowling was a nice distraction for a day.

My one other tip for the USA: avoid Denver, head straight for Aspen!

A judgement without experience is the worst kind

Port of Call: best burger in town

If I could recommend one place to go in the United States of America, it would be New Orleans.

Now this statement would have surprised me a week ago when Jonno & I did the thing any traveller should not do- we googled to see if N.O was dangerous.

Now why this may seem quite logical, in truth, the only kinds of people who write in those forums are those who've had a bad experience...and with the number of tourists who actually visit a city, that's not very many.

So we arrived in the city with trepidation, constantly looking over our shoulder...only to discover how wonderfully friendly and generous the people of New Orleans are.

I can only imagine how crazy this place gets in summer, let alone HOT!

Halloween Preparations

It's that time of the year again...Halloween time!

This very American holiday is apparently becoming bigger than Christmas, which is rather evident from the giant Halloween-based stores popping up all over town, with hundreds of costumes, decorations (life-size Freddie Kruger anyone?) and candy galore filling these warehouses.

It is for this reason that I am very excited to still be in the states on Halloween-in San Francisco- and Jonno and I are on the hunt for some fun/cheap costumes for the night

These pictures are some of the treats that our friends Abby and Paul have just lying around their Belvidere, Illinois house!

The local apple orchard is pumpkin crazy!

Brooklyn we go hard

A few pictures from the other side of the river

The Brooklyn Bridge is a masterpiece

Williamsburg is hipster central but completely livable

And this is one of the best stores I have been into, with some of the nicest sales assistants i have encountered

Brooklyn is just cool

Digs

Sorry about the dark photos- the building was apparently never fitted with down lights

Finally putting up pictures of our NY pad

Even though its not too modern, it has been the perfect place due to its big size and abundance of weird, crazy crap

Has been a ball checking out all the owners nick-knacks!

Plus it's in probably the best area we could have asked for- West Village, right in the heart of the shopping, nightlife and food...i'm not leaving!
